For the first time in three years, Viking water polo teams did not head to the state championships.
The men finished second last season, losing in the championship to “Team November” Golden West.
It was the Rustlers’ 25th men’s championship in the sport.
In the opening So Cal tournament game against Grossmont of San Diego, the Viking claimed a 12-7 victory and advanced to the second round to face Golden West and like last season, it was the Rustlers who dashed the Vikes’ hope for a championship, falling 11-6.
LBCC claimed third in the tournament with a close 11-10 victory over Riverside. The women failed to advance to the state championships a year ago and despite finishing conference play with an 8-2 record this year, both losses came to rival Cerritos, who the Vikes faced in the opening round of the So Cal tournament.
The Falcons again defeated the Vikings, 5-3, ending the season for LBCC. The men have 8 state championships with the most recent in 2006.
The women have captured three state titles with the most recent also in 2006
