Women’s cage ball, a single elimination, 10-minute soccer-style game took place on Friday, March 4, where clubs PNK, Ladies of Athena and TNT had representative teams in the tournament.
Sue Jimenez, 22, a biology major and English and Spanish minor, said, “the best way to stay active is to be a part of intramurals and we encourage students to join a club and stay active.” Jimenez is a member of PNK, a women’s social service club that was established in Spring 2012 at Long Beach City College.
The two other clubs that participated in Friday’s event were the Ladies of Athena and TNT, both women’s social service organizations at LBCC.
Derek Oriee, the student activities advisor and former LBCC student, refereed the game spoke about his experience with the intramural program in the 80s as a student. “We even competed with Universities … and although it has slowed down in recent decades, the program is on an ‘upswing’ and I look forward to the growing of a program that has been a part of my life since college.” Oriee said LBCC is one of the few community colleges that offers an intramural program.
Marina Dillon, 19, an animal science major and member of the Ladies of Athena, said “as a college student you stop being athletic and this is a great way to be active yourself and with the college.”
Students who would like to join can do so by visiting the LBCC website, OrgSync.com or get information from students who are already involved and students are not required to join a club to play an intramural sport.
