Former member of the 2001 LBCC softball championship team, Megan Martinez, will return to the Vikings as the new head coach of the softball team.

New Athletic Director Randy Totorp announced the hiring. Martinez was previously the head coach of El Camino College Compton Center for four seasons. After finishing her first season with a 3-25 record, the new LBCC head coach finished her last season at El Camino with a 23-16 mark.

On the opportunity to come back and coach for her former college, Martinez said, “It is an absolute honor to be able to return home and give back to the school, community and athletic department that did so much for me.”

As far as her overall goal as coach, the former LBCC championship team member said, “My biggest pleasure will come in providing the same opportunities and life-long experiences that were afforded to me during my LBCC student days.”

Martinez not only played softball at LBCC, but she also graduated with honors earning herself an associate of arts degree. She then received her bachelor’s degree in English literature with a minor in communications.

She recently obtained her master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University Irvine.

Martinez will replace Melissa Angel, the coach of the Viking softball team for eight seasons.
